Title: Get By
Fandom: Buffy and Angel.
Music: Talib Kweli.

"Angel, I'm dying."
"Yeah. It's a lot easier than redemption, huh?"

--Faith and Angel, Orpheus.

Download here.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get this thing together, especially [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, and as always thank you [livejournal.com profile] angisageek for the webspace. Also thank you to everyone who was chatting with me at the time and tolerated my random outbursts of "You know who's hot? Faith." In my defense, aspect ratios were making me somewhat delirious.

Also, I've been moving things around in the process of making a website, and so none of the old links for my other vids worked. I have updated the links now and it should all be kosher. My vids can be seen here.
Music:: Rest in Peace from Once More With Feeling.

I suck at in-depth vid feedback, but I really liked it. :)

Oh, this was great. I absolutely love the pace of it, the way it charges forward while offering wonderful insight into their dynamics and how much they've evolved over the seasons. Thank you for sharing!

Oh, thank you so much! I really loved making such a fast vid, and I'm glad you liked it.

It's funny, if someone had asked me about the violence in the shows I would've said that it'd never shocked me. But somehow you take that same footage and make some of it horrifying. And moving and important and coherent and strong. This is an amazing vid.

Huh! Interesting, because I wasn't consciously trying to do that. What parts made you think that?

I am so thrilled that you liked it. *squeezes you*

hell yea! that was awesome! i love how fast-paced it is, but it's all really well-cued without being literal. especially the part around 1:14 with the triple-take that syncs with the lyrics, brilliant. also, it shows all these different points in Faith and Angel's development, really appropriate to the song.
but you already knew all that. it's great, i wish i had been there. maybe next year...

*beams* Thank you so much. It's such a fast song and the lyrics are hard to understand at first listen, so I was really worried that it would go right over people's heads.

And yes! It would be awesome if you came next year. :D

This is an awesome, kick ass vid!

The whole thing was great but I especially loved the juxtaposition between Faith's coma dreams and Angel's underwater hallucinations around 2:31-2:42. I also really liked the ironic little touches (like the cartoon Superman on the "TV got us reaching for stars" line and Angel jumping into the car on "penis enlargers"), they work on their own and also lend even more weight to the more serious clips. And the ending sequence, starting at around 3:02, was just perfect.

Thank you for posting!

Eee! I'm so glad you noticed that stuff--I know the lyrics are kind of hard to understand, so I'm glad that came through anyway. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Downloaded this days ago because I figure I have enough in common with anyone who loves Faith as much as you do that it would be an enjoyable experience, and then I watched it, and then I spent some bandwidth downloading all of Faith's Angel episodes and watching them and then I rewatched the vid and it's excellent. Although clearly not good for my bandwidth. ;)

I liked it all but I think the lyrical juxtaposition I love the most, even though I don't know the song AT ALL, was the "love is unconditional" shot with Faith breaking out of prison. It was an awesome shot in the show and it's a fantastically used shot there, and, yeah, I know nothing about vid and vid feedback but. *thumbs up*

And now? I'm gonna rewatch Orpheus, uh-huh. And then maybe track down Buffy S7, who knows.

Saying that it inspired you to watch those episodes again feels like such a compliment, because seriously, 5x5, Sanctuary and Faith's episodes in season 4 of Angel are some of my favorite episodes of any TV show, ever. (Which... is possibly obvious, considering that I made a whole vid about them.)

I'm so happy you noticed the lyric stuff! I knew that because I was doing a rap song, a lot of the lyrics would go over people's heads, so it's nice to hear that some stuff did stand out. Thank you so much for this feedback.

This was one of my favorites from the Nearly New show, and I was thrilled to see it on the con DVDs--it's a really powerful, technically polished vid. Awesome job.

I love the music choice. Sadly, I heard Talib Kweli's Get By (DJ Ayres Reggaeton Remix) without ever listening to this original version until I saw a live version on Dave Chappelle's Block Party.
:00-:11 - Great slow stillness in the beginning that builds a little tension.
Attack of the Clones - Nice touch of humor.
just to get by - Love the stakes coming out on beat.
We survivalists, turned to consumers - Great lyric to the clip of Angel setting the fire.
This morning, I woke up - Nice use of lyrics again.
Feeling my highs, and my lows in my soul, and my goals - I like the repeating of the clip.
1:05-1:25 - My favorite lyric section.
We keeping it gangster say "fo shizzle", "fo sheezy", and "stayin crunk" / It's easy to pull a breezy, smoke trees, and we stay drunk - Just another part I really liked what you did.
when the livin' is miserable - Love how you brought Conner into the vid.
The TV got us reachin' for stars and breast enhancements and penis enlargers - Another nice touch of humor.
When, all you really need is love - Again, I keep quoting the lyrics because I really love how you used them in relation to the source.
2:30-2:42 - Great back and forth editing.
Great clip to end with.

Yeah, I heard the DJ Ayres remix long before I ever heard the original. The remix was good, but when I bought the album and heard that version I was blown away by how powerful it was. (And whoo, someone else who's seen Dave Chappelle's Block Party. What an awesome movie.)

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I had doubts about the Connor parts, especially, so I'm glad they worked for people other than me.

Yeah, the remix is good, but the original has more "power" in it.

(And whoo, someone else who's seen Dave Chappelle's Block Party. What an awesome movie.)
I'm so in love with it. When I first got it, I had it playing on my tv in the background over and over again while I did other stuff.

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback. I had doubts about the Connor parts...
You're welcome. The Connor parts worked for me, I think, because he was a connection between the two and they influenced more than most.

Slowly getting around to downloading all the vividcon vids.

I love the way you’ve captured the flow of the rap, dipping in and out of the lyric and every time the chorus comes round it hurts a little more. And it starts with Faith and then Angel has a verse and then Faith but gradually you intermix their stories more and more, because that’s why they can help each other they’ve been to the same places. Especially love the parallels made in the bridge between Faith’s dream grave and Angel’s watery one and that beautiful shot of her breakdown at the end.

I am not strong with the vid feedback, but I will say that this had a good beat and you could dance to it. Good work, youse.

Liked the retrospective look at Faith in particular. It was a great song choice and opened up some of her relationships with others.
