I need Recommendations!
1) A (free) (for Macs) program to convert .mp4 to .mp3 or .m4a. I KNOW ONE HAS TO EXIST SOMEWHERE. Somewhere! And I need it. :(
2) A good cell phone. My ancient Nokia with the crack down the middle of the screen has been dying for a while, plus I am in need of one that actually has texting abilities (see above re: :( ). What phones/plans have you guys found to be cheap yet glorious? Or at least, you know, doable. Alternately, if there are companies that you've had such bad experiences with that the thought of them getting even just one more customer makes you froth at the mouth, let me know.
3) Non-subscription allergy medicine. Alavert has been so useless I just have to laugh--except that I'd get snot everywhere, so no. Benadryl is also a no, as the last time I tried it it gave me horrible headaches and nausea. Fun times in my body.
Alternately, you could just give me Frank/Bob porn in my comments. That would work, too.

I know that all the Cetirizine hydrochloride types make me actively worse (which includes benadryl one a day) but the loratadine (such as claritin) are okay. I get the supermarket own brand version of that and it's fine, or at least makes things no worse.
Point is, brand names are bollocks, go by the chemical name.

My mum has the big book of scary medicine, which lists every drug, every active component, every side-effect and every contraindication. A fun way to spend an afternoon!

Wow, that book would make me so paranoid and scared of chemicals.

This all started when they signed him up for a new 2-year contract without bothering to check with him first, so I am very much not in favor of Verizon. OTOH, he has no complaints so far about t-mobile (now that they have enough network to be worthwhile), and I have had no major complaints re: Sprint in seven years (omg am old), including being able to get new phones on my Boston number out here in SF, which Verizon was never able to do for t'brother's NYC number (strike number eleventywhatever against them.)
3) if Alavert doesn't work for you, probably neither will Claritin or any of the other loratadine-based ones; the best option I can give you is to look for something with chlorpheniramine maleate (I cannot believe I remembered how to spell that) and try that. Alternately, if you are low-grade hayfeverish year round with occasional spikes involving pollen seasons or affectionate cats, like me, I've found that daily loratadine with layering of chlorpheniramine maleate (now I'm just showing off *G*) as necessary is a godsend. Just watch out for heavy machinery until you've figured out how you react, blah blah safetycakes. And definitely read the labels and pick up the store-brand, not the fancypants label.

Basically, it all comes down to whether or not the files are secured. If they're *un*secured, you should be able to do it in iTunes. Go to the iTunes menu -> Preferences..., then click on Advanced, then Importing, then make sure you're using the appropriate converter for whatever you want your files to end up as (so, if you want to convert to MP3, switch it to the MP3 Encoder). Then to convert a file, you can import it into your iTunes library, and do whatever represents a right-click on your computer** on the track in your library, and select "Convert to MP3". Easy peasy.
For secured files, it's a little trickier. The hymn project (http://www.hymn-project.org/) used to be the go-to place on these sorts of issues, but AFAIK the project has basically been abandoned since iTunes 6. Honestly, the fastest and easiest way to do it is (IMO) burn it to a cd and then rerip it--you lose a little quality, but, well. Ahahaha. I don't hear very well to begin with, and my headphones aren't nice enough to notice. If you use a CD-RW, you should be able to blank it out and reuse it as many times as you want--it's still a pain in the ass but worth it, I think, to not have to bother with the whole secured files and how they hardly play anywhere thing.
** I have a MacBook, so it's two fingers on the track pad+click on mine, but I think it's...ctrl+click on other Macs? I, I used to do this professionally and yet I TOTALLY DON'T REMEMBER, so hopefully you know. *facepalm*

2. sprint and i had Major Issues when i moved from downtown manhattan to uptown, and i ended up disconnecting and moving to verizon. sprint's customer service hotline was awful, awful, awful. every time i called, they'd tell me something different. so far (just under two years in), so good, but it does seem rather expensive to me. i'm not 100% sure i'll renew my contract when it expires -- i'm considering a pay as you go or other option. also, nextel (which is now owned by sprint) is pretty worthless -- a friend of mine has it and it has shitty connectivity in the city, plus their customer service is unhelpful when it comes to repairing/replacing phones properly.
3. my allergy med of choice is allegra. if you're prone to drowsiness, you can try allegra d, but i'm pretty sensitive and i've never had too much of a problem with the regular kind.

I really disliked Sprint. I am happy with Cingular but it is not the cheapest thing ever. Do not get a Razr. Mine is only a year and a half old and it makes the most obnoxious buzzing noise from something in the mouthpiece being loose. Granted, this is probably my own fault for dropping it so much, but still.

2) i have the enV and i love it like burning. i'm with verizon and it's never done me wrong. i have the 1500 texts out and unlimited in. an extra $10 a month i think.
3) otc claritin works for me.
3--
I've had success with Allegra (fexofenadine), but it's not available without prescription. That article also has links to articles about other antihistamines that may or may not be available OTC. Good luck!!
