It's going to take me forever to get through all the vids that premiered at VividCon this year, seeing as I'm off to LA the day after tomorrow (WHAT) and also that I've never been more distracted by bandslash, but:

Anyone who's ever watched Supernatural ought to watch this vid. Seriously. Women's Work by [livejournal.com profile] sockkpuppett and [livejournal.com profile] sisabet

Also, I know there is probably totally gossip about the fandom reaction to this at the con, and I'm kinda dying to know what it is. >_>

*raises hand*

I was there, at the show where it premiered and at formal Vid Review the next morning. I can't remember any really marked reaction (but it's rare to get a really marked, audible reaction in the quiet room during the Premieres show at Vivid), though someone pointed it out to me in the program before the show and remarked that they'd heard it was "trigger-y."

At Vid Review, as I recall, people latched on to the fact that the song was by Hole and all seemed to agree that this meant it was not wholly unironic. A few people who'd never seen SPN vowed never to watch it on the strength of the vid; a few people (echoing what I felt myself) said they'd expected the vid to end with the contrasting views of women kicking ass or at least surviving; and then there was some debate over the selectivity of the argument being made, because women getting violently killed isn't the only thing going on in the show (with a quick analogy to "we make selective arguments when we make slash vids, too, is that different?" and an equally quick agreement that no, it's not, SPN-as-woman-bashing-slasher-flick is equally valid as Methos-and-Duncan-are-so-doing-it).

That's what I recall off the top of my head, anyway. I'm no official spokesperson for the con or anything.

Huh, okay. It makes sense that it would have that kind of reaction, although I'm... almost glad I wasn't there, because it's so hard for me to keep my cool during discussions about women in SPN. Sigh. thanks!

I mean, that was all moving from the baseline reaction of "Thanks for making me feel ashamed as a feminist to like this show." So it wasn't totally dismissive of the very valid issues raised, but there were about five minutes to discuss the vid, so debate was compressed.

That's a pretty good summary from what I recall, too (being a person not familiar with Hole and thus operating off just the title and fandom which led me to a very different expectation from what I saw).

There's a discussion about the vid and the reaction to it in [livejournal.com profile] vonnie_k's LJ right now... Also [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's.

Man, that vid was like a sock to the gut. God. I love so many of the classic horror themes that SPN has, but I really wish it had skipped out on that one. I keep thinking I should catch up, but... man, sometimes it's a bit too much.

... Man, this show's been around for like, what, two seasons now? That is WAY too many ladies brutally murdered and/or horribly maimed.

Fandom was too busy freaking out about the Dexter vid, which came without a warning or announcement of fandom at the beginning.

That vid is so awesome. Someone needed to make it. And thankfully two amazing vidders did!

Wish you could have been at VVC this year!
